Municipal IQ is a unique web-based data and intelligence service specialising in the monitoring and assessment of all of South Africa’s 283 municipalities.
What makes Municipal IQ unique? Municipal IQ measures the performance of SA’s municipalities on a range of critical socio-economic and financial issues that reflect the reality of local government circumstances and risk on the ground. Further, Municipal IQ actively compares, contrasts and ranks municipalities, one against the other.
Subscribers to Municipal IQ gain access to three unique services: the Municipal IQ web-based products; the Municipal IQ briefing service; and the Municipal IQ query service.
A. Municipal IQ has developed a range of web-based products for use by subscribers:

- Poverty Gap Index™ (measuring municipalities’ ability to respond to poverty)

- Municipal Expenditure Monitor
- Municipal Revenue Monitor

- Monitor of Municipal Population Growth
- Monitor of Municipal Household Growth
- Hotspots Monitor (detailing municipal service delivery protests)
- 3 individual profiles:
- General Profile (summarising pertinent data from the indices and monitors for each municipality)
- Poverty Profile
- Fiscal and economic profile
All indices and monitors can be viewed interactively; by individual municipality, municipal category or by province; as well as by choosing individual variables. Graphic interface is furthered enhanced by Municipal IQ’s unique mapping system which combines satellite images with municipal boundary maps. In addition, Municipal IQ also has an extensive, easy to grasp, GIS system available for all its indices and monitors.
B. Municipal IQ also provides a briefing service to subscribers through which it is able to provide ongoing analysis of its indices and monitors. Municipal IQ also monitors ongoing issues, developments, trends and crises in the local government environment and provides succinct up-to-the minute briefing notes to clients on breaking news, containing strategic analysis and discussions of policy implications. Briefings are e-mailed to subscribers.
C. Municipal IQ also provides a query service to subscribers. Subscribers are able to send data queries to Municipal IQ requesting specific information on Municipal IQ data not explicitly provided in the web-based products.
